There’s nothing this family-run business doesn’t know about fish and seafood…
It all started in the summer of 1977, with a filleting knife, a bench chained to a post, a £500 bank loan – and a strong work ethic. That’s how Dennis Crooks began his fish selling business, and that’s one of the reasons we’re pleased to be working with this family-run Whitby enterprise.
Sourcing only the finest MSC-certified sustainable fish and seafood, they supply us with the choicest seasonal options both for our restaurant – you can find their hake on our menu right now – and in our just-opened Crab Shack (don’t miss the traditional cod fish ‘n’ chips). They’ve even won MSC’s special achievement award, as well as the “Seafood supplier of the year” two years running at the Food Awards England.
His son William and daughter Holly, now heavily involved in the business, remember going down to Whitby harbour with their dad to buy fish direct from the fisherman. And although it’s grown hugely, Dennis’s business is still all about community, sourcing the best fish from Whitby fisherman, and promoting local Whitby seafood around the entire country.
It’s all part of our ongoing sustainability journey, where we’re striving to work closer with the local community while doing our best to protect the precious North Yorkshire environment.
