Summer is officially here, and where better to enjoy it than beautiful Sandsend beach, an easy walk away from Raithwaite Sandsend? Here are 5 reasons why we love it…
1. Views, glorious views
The little village of Sandsend is blessed with a gorgeous sweep of treacle-coloured sand, hemmed in by cliffs, with a special section for swimming in the summer months. The beach stretches down towards Whitby, where you’ll spot the mysterious ruins of Whitby Abbey in the distance, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
2. Family fun
At low tide, you’ll find numerous rock pools, especially towards the northern end, all busy with the comings and goings of sea critters. Kids of all ages will love poking about looking for crabs and shells. Do keep an eye on the tides, as the sea comes in quickly.
3. Seaside walking
It’s possible to walk along the coast all the way to the lovely fishing town of Whitby, which takes about an hour and a half – and is perfect with dogs. Once there, have a stroll around the old lanes, and don’t miss the famous 199 steps leading up to the Abbey. Note that some of the beach is dog-free at this time of year.
4. Fossils galore
Take a closer look at the rocks towards the back of the Sandsend beach. You might just be lucky and spot a fossil, such as the easy-to-identify ammonite. This whole coast is popular with fossil hunters for just that reason.
5. Lunch on the beach
Have you discovered our new Crab Shack yet? We serve up the freshest fish ‘n’ chips, dressed Whitby crab and scrumptious salt and pepper calamari. Take your pick then head down to the beach for a delicious lunch with your toes in the sand.
