There’s so much to do in and around Raithwaite Sandsend during the warm summer months.
This is when the moors and the beach burst into life – and from walking and biking, to beach yoga and boat trips, we know just how to make the most of it all.
Strap on your boots, step outside and you’re off. Many of Yorkshire’s loveliest walks begin right on our Raithwaite estate, while others are just a short drive away. Pick up one of our walking route guides at Reception for more information on the beautiful walks in Whitby and beyond.
Pedal your way to Robin’s Hood Bay via Whitby, with the sun on your face, the wind on your back, and the wild countryside unfurling around you. Talk to our Concierge team who will be happy to share a range of inspiring Whitby cycle routes.
Ready to hit the surf and catch some waves? Whether you’re a beginner or know your stuff, we can arrange lessons to cater to all levels. Lessons take place in the secret surf-spot of Sandsend, known only to local insiders. Have a chat to our Concierge for more info and to book.
Head out on the waves on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP), the perfect way to explore the Yorkshire coastline. Our master paddleboarder, Simon, is on hand to guide you over the waves and offer advice on where to go. Speak to our Concierge team for more details.

AUTUMN/WINTER (October – February)
The cooler months are perfect for a bracing walk around our grounds or along the beach. Or how about a guided stargazing session with a hot drink under a cosy blanket? We have plenty of activities to see you through the wintry weather.
From a hike to gorgeous Robin Hood’s Bay or a stroll around historic Whitby, to child-friendly beach wanders, our Concierge has a wide range of walking routes and advice – or can book a guided walk with an experienced team member.
Bring your bike and cycle the Cinder Track from Whitby to Scarborough, while admiring the breathtaking coastal views along the way. We can also arrange bike hire through our local hire company. Just ask at Reception and we’ll gear you up.

SPRING (March – June)
Springtime in Yorkshire is a colourful affair, and the fairer weather and longer days make it all the easier to enjoy our glorious outdoors. Take long leisurely walks with the dog, try your hand at fly fishing, or paint your own masterpiece – you might just be the next David Hockney.
Hike to charming Runswick Bay, stroll over to the historic harbour town of Whitby, or keep things local and explore Sandsend Beach or even our beautiful gardens at in the hotel, which come into full bloom during spring. Pick up one of our informative walking packs for more ideas.
Make the most of the wild outdoors with a sunny ride over the Esk Valley, taking in the fabulous views as you head towards Robin Hood’s Bay. Pick up a pack at Reception offering a range of suggested bike trails.
